Keep Track

Has anyone ever wondered how much stuff you own? Or how much the stuff in a particular room in your home is worth? How much of it is electronics and how much of it is jewelry; oh and how much of it is collectibles and antiques? If there is a burglary or some other loss, how do you know for sure what is gone and how much it was worth when the police and the insurance guys ask you?

The number of electronics I own is slowly beginning to get out of hand. Not to mention the crazy amount of money I spend on books every month! So I was thinking of using a household inventory system that kind of keeps track of stuff like price paid, warranty information, current worth, etc. I came across a few very promising inventory software but the one that stands out is by a company called Frostbow (http://frostbow.com/products/home_inventory.html).

The only issue is that it is a 30-day trial after which it costs to register and keep using it. It is an issue ‘coz I don’t wish to do that. Has anyone ever thought of  using anything like this or is anyone already using something similar? If so do leave a comment with any ideas, information, opinions and thoughts. I’m all ears (or in this case I’m all ‘eyes’!).

Maybe a spreadsheet with some macros should be enough.

And why exactly do you need to
    1. Keep track of stuff you own.
    2. Warranty information
    3. Current worth

Just make sure that you file away all the receipts (and things like warranty card etc.) properly and you can check up on them whenever required.

You could also use a separate calendar in http://calendar.google.com for just noting what you bought when and when the warranty expires etc.

“why keep track?” well, why not? when there are too many things owned, especially electronics and other valuables an efficient way to track is needed. plus there is one dedicated system that can manage these things – all information in one place. excel is too basic. google calendar is too sparse.
